Environmental Stewardship

Reforestation Programmes
In line with AEON Credit effort in reducing carbon footprint and increase the greenery area for the benefit of future generation, the Group had initiated and supported reforestation activities since 2009. The Group first participated during AEON 25th Anniversary – AEON Woodland Programme in 2009 at Paya Indah Wetland where 25,000 trees were planted together with local community and AEON Japan volunteers.
Ever since 2009, the Group had continue to partner with AEON Malls, Government Agencies and Environmental based NGO to plant trees at AEON Malls, forest reserves and community area in our bid to increase the greenery area for a cleaner and greener environment.
In November 2019, the Group had collaborated with Sarawak Forestry Department to rehabilitate 15 ha of forest reserve that was destroyed by fire during the haze season in March that year. This is the first time where AEON Credit had embarked on a major reforestation project and in 2022, the Group will commence with Phase 2 plantings.
Other than forest tree species, the Group had also planted mangrove saplings in Sabah since 2018. Currently, the Group continue to increase the number of saplings planted in Lema’as Forest Reserve Kota Belud, Sabah as part of our effort to protect the coastal area from erosion.

Coastal Clean-Up Activities
As part of AEON Credit initiative to protect life under water and keeping the coastal area clean, the Group organised annual coastal clean-up activities and to-date had managed to remove more than 20 tonnes of waste.
Together with local communities and local authorities, the Group volunteers hand-in-hand work together to ensure there should be no waste flow back to the sea from coastal area. The waste that was collected will be separated and recycled as part of the Group initiative to promote a carbon-free environment.

Responsible Consumption
AEON Credit received ISO 140001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification since 2013. Among the Group initiative to comply with the certification is to go paperless in our operation and committed to avoid unnecessary paper consumption. This also includes digital transformation to automate day-to-day operations and on-going campaigns on prudent use of paper.
As the pandemic has created a new norm of working environment, the Group actively promotes digital meeting solutions to improve productivity and going paperless for all corporate level meetings. Working From Home (WFH) also saw the transition from desktop to laptop and the used desktop will be refurbished as donation to community.
E-waste generated increased in tandem with the Group’s operation becomes more technological driven and highly dependent on IT equipment and gadgets. The Group has set in place appropriate management practices which covers collection, recycling and disposal to ensure that it does not harm to environment. Scheduled waste disposal comprising of e-waste and paper complies with the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005.
Other on-going efficient use of resources includes energy saving initiatives such as the introduction of LED lighting for new and refurbished branches as well as using energy efficient display for all branches.
